About us
Black Semiconductor GmbH based in Aachen, Germany
Black Semiconductor, a deep-technology startup based in Aachen, Germany, is poised to redefine the semiconductor landscape. Founded in 2020 as a spin-off from the nonprofit research center AMO, Black Semiconductor is pioneering a new category of chip technology.
Black Semiconductor Integrated Graphene Photonics™ technology integrates electronics and photonics onto traditional silicon chips independent of the CMOS node, enabling unprecedented performance, energy efficiency, and scalability. Graphene, known for its exceptional electrical conductivity, optical transparency, and mechanical strength, allows for optical data transfer at speeds far surpassing conventional electronic interconnects. Unlike traditional silicon-based chips, where electronic signals are limited to short distances (a few centimeters), Black Semiconductor’s approach uses graphene based photonics to transmit data over longer distances with minimal energy loss. This breakthrough addresses critical bottlenecks in chip architectures, particularly for data-intensive applications like AI training, autonomous driving, 5G networks, and high-performance computing.
