About us
The Fraunhofer IPT combines long time knowledge and experience in all areas of production technology. Located in Aachen, Germany, we offer special and immediate practical solutions for a connected, adaptive production in the fields of process technology, production machines, production quality and metrology, as well as technology management. We have a strong focus on optical technologies and over 25 years of experience in optical manufacturing and assembly technologies. Therefore, we focus all of our expertise on the production and evaluation of complex optical components and systems. At Fraunhofer IPT, we cover the full depth of the development and manufacturing of optical systems throughout the entire supply chain – starting with the design of optical systems, continuing with optics manufacturing through glass molding and polymer injection molding, reaching over precision assembly technologies for optical system and culminating in final qualification.

Fraunhofer IPT provides efficient solutions for the entire production process chain of components made of optical glasses and infrared transmissive glasses as well as polymers such as aspheres, freeforms, MLAs, wafer-level components and thin glass components. One of our competencies is the development of monitoring software for cyber-physical systems in optics production. The software provides machine data and numerical simulation on various devices to make optics production smarter. A wide range of replication processes for nano, micro and macro structures is available, covering master production by structuring, step and repeat embossing and electro forming through to injection molding.
Smart Optics Production – Intelligent Glass Molding
In contrast to conventional processing by grinding and polishing, precision glass molding as a replicative manufacturing process is particularly suitable for the production of optical components with complex geometries. At Fraunhofer IPT, we develop holistic technology solutions – from Design and simulation to qualification and on-site training. Our Smart Optics Production aims at a fully digitized, efficient and high yield manufacturing scenarios.
Thin Glass Molding – Efficient manufacturing for next-level automotive and consumer electronics products
Whether high-quality components in motor vehicles or components in electronics, the semiconductor industry or sensor technology: thin glass can be used in many different ways. In particular, thin glass is used where components need to be thinner or of higher quality. The advantage: The thin glass, which is only a few micrometers thick, is light, elastic and yet stable. Fraunhofer IPT can support you in development and employment of various thin glass forming technologies.
