Within the PhoQuant project a new photonic computer architecture will be developed, which is the basis of a quantum computer with up to 100 qubits. Quantum computers solve problems that are not solvable by classical computers with acceptable computing time. By connecting many computing units (qubits) in one system a higher computing speed can be achieved compared to classical computers. The photonic approach, which uses light particles (photons) as qubits, offers enormous advantages as the functions required for the computing operations can be produced on a single chip using sophisticated semiconductor manufacturing processes.
Besides coordinating the PhoQuant project, Q.ANT develops a photonic integrated chip (PIC) on the basis of Lithium Niobate on Insulator in order to build a quantum computer together with its project partners.
