The Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Optics and Precision Engineering IOF in Jena conducts applied research in the field of photonics and develops innovative optical systems to control light - from the generation and manipulation to its application. The services offered by the Institute covers the entire photonic process chain from opto-mechanical and opto-electronic system design to manufacturing of custom-specific solutions and prototypes. Current focuses of our research activities include freeform technologies, micro- and nanotechnologies, fiber laser systems, quantum optics, and optical technologies for safe human-machine interaction.
Antireflection coatings AR-plas2® for the 380 nm to 2500 nm spectral range can be produced on an industrial scale. A silica nanostructure on the outermost surface of the coating guarantees a low residual reflectance for a broad range of light incidence angles and a high transmission from the ultraviolet to the infrared spectral region. Coatings AR-plas2® exhibit a high temperature and humidity resistance. They are especially suitable for curved optical lenses in camera systems.
An entire process chain for the additive manufacturing of metal mirrors and -modules out of AlSi12, AlSi40, and Al6061 is developed, enabling the processing of substrates up to Ø 230 mm by selective laser melting. Due to the lightweight design with stochastic or symmetric structures, a mass reduction of up to 75 % is achieved. Manufactured optics of Ø 170 mm exhibit high stability and stiffness along with surface roughness of < 1 nm RMS and form deviation of < 150 nm PV after post-finishing.
Conformal coatings are enabled by atomic layer deposition (ALD). This coating technology, which is broadly applied in semiconductor industry, is based on surface reactions of precursor molecules at the substrate or growing thin film. It allows precise thickness and composition control on arbitrarily shaped optics and micro/ nanostructured components.
